Ip Man III is back after 5 years
After a hiatus of 5 years from Ip Man II, Donnie Yen
re-embarks on full forces, sharpening his Wing Chun skills and losing weight
for the last installment of the Ip Man series and very likely his own farewell
performance in Kung Fu movies. From the first one to the third one, Yen had
developed an insightful perception of the psyche of Ip Man, “Although I present
him as another human being, he is in fact more of a spirit that represents
every single Chinese. Hope the movie will arouse the patriotic love in all of
us.”
Considered to be China’s top action star, Yen is also
credited by many for contributing to the popularization of Wing Chun. With his
interpretation of Ip Man, the series movie has not only become a blockbuster hit,
but also led to an increase in the number of people taking up Wing Chun,
leading to hundreds of new Wing Chun schools to be opened up in mainland China
and other parts of Asia.
The returning stars Donnei Yen and Dai-Lin Hung are joined
by a bunch of new faces in Ip Man III. At the end of the last
movie, the appearance of the young Bruce Lee had built the audience’s
expectation high. The establishment of the apprenticeship between Ip Man and
Bruce Lee, the exchanging blows between the two legendary Kung Fu icons and the
deep emotional bonding between the master and the pupil all constitute a great
part of the movie. As for the actor of Bruce Lee, the producer only discloses
that he will be presented in an unprecedented way in Chinese movies to make
sure of the authenticity—looks like the suspense can only be lifted in the
cinema.
The former world heavyweight-boxing champion Mike Tyson will
also play an evil boss who runs the black boxing market. By challenging Ip Man,
he starts war between western boxing and Chinese Kung Fu. Though not present
the press conference in person, Tyson dares Donnie Yen through an aggressive
video. This is Tyson’s movie debut in China and the second step into Chinese
market after opening up his weibo account earlier.
To guarantee a flawless consistency, Ip Man III is created by the same crew—director Wilson Yip, executive producer Raymond Wong and scriptwriter Edmond Wong, with the renowned action director Yuen Woo-ping. Ip Man III is not simply the continuation of a series movie, it also carries out the spirit of Chinese martial art and the quintessence of Chinese culture.
